The Flying Pig.......................the story behind The Good Hearing Advisor logo

First and foremost I firmly believe that to survive hearing loss you need a damn good sense of humour!

I inherited my mum’s very naughty sense of humour, but mine is twice as naughty and a bit more quirky!

You also need to add to that a strong sense of optimism and although there are times when it shies away from us, we have to keep that optimism strong and know that if today is a bit crap, tomorrow is going to be good. Hence pigs will darn well fly!!

The Flying Pig found me while I was rooting around on a market stall on Spittle Fields Market a few years

ago.  I had been in London attending 2 Deaf Conferences and in between these I was doing one of the

things a do best, bargain hunting!

Only 3 days earlier Leo our new horse had arrived following the loss of my previous horse Louis.

Mum was determined a new horse would be found and kept the optimistic candle burning for me, I didn’t

think it would happen but as usual mums are right! And again yep pigs will fly! So finding the flying pig on the market stall was just so "meant to be".

The flying pig necklace became a talking point and people often made the link to the pig being suited to my nutty sense of humour. Then one day I lost the pig!!!! Arghhhh but lucky for me a colleague found it on the carpark and it had been run over!!! The nice shiny brass pig went all dull and no amount of Brillo would bring the shine back. As it was brass plated over lead or something like that I was just a bit miffed. So in a moment of rashness, I asked a local jeweller if the pig could be immortalised in silver and a few weeks later my new bright shiny pig arrived.

And talking of Optimism and Hope, at the first conference I discovered an amazing organisation called

Deaf Hope.  Lynn Shannon’s presentation was the last on the agenda and sadly by the time she spoke the guest MPs and “VIP”s attending the conference had all left, as had a number of people with trains to catch. Deaf Hope is a vital organisation supporting Deaf BSL users who are victims of domestic abuse, did you know Deaf women are twice as likely to be abused as hearing women..................check out their website for the See Hear report if you want to know more.
